Southgate Associates

About us

We believe that development and conservation are not incompatible aspirations, but rather that heritage buildings evolve over time to meet the needs of their occupants. We help our clients to design in ways which maintain the importance and atmosphere of the old, while introducing the new.

30 Years Conserving Ireland’s Built Heritage

The Company

When Southgate Associates was established in 1990, it was solely a conservation engineering practice, but the complex needs of clients, projects and the regulatory environment saw the practice expand in a multi-disciplinary direction, to offer a broad range of heritage conservation services from a team with a diverse set of backgrounds, including architecture, engineering, surveying, archaeology, anthropology and planning.

A key area of our work involves the conservation of historic buildings to best practice standards, with an emphasis on maintaining authenticity through minimal intervention approaches, unless more radical measures are justified. In addition, we work with our clients to achieve sympathetic development, which make heritage buildings and landscapes more sustainable in the long-term.

Our Approach

We agree with the best international thinking on urban and rural planning which view heritage resources as being of huge economic and social value to their communities. We have spent our 30 year history helping state bodies, local authorities and voluntary organisations committed to the preservation of Ireland’s built heritage, to implement heritage-led urban renewal programmes.

As such, we have spent thirty years with a hands-on approach to conservation, delivering atmospherically conserved buildings, stabilised dangerous historic structures and preserved heritage streetscapes – all of which equips us well to assist in the implementation of the historic rural and urban landscape agenda in Ireland, a commitment toward a more holistic approach to planning and heritage landscape management.
