Kingston College Mitchelstown

Addressing vacancy as a result of building deterioration

In 2022, Southgate Associates conducted a survey of the 32 houses of Kingston College, a complex of residential homes which belong to the Church of Ireland, in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork.

Funded by the Heritage Council under the Community Heritage Scheme, the survey represents the first step in understanding the deterioration to various buildings which have made them uninhabitable.

In an effort to bring the complex into full usage, both as part of a need to address the housing crisis, but also to offer several houses to Ukrainian refugees, the Church wish to address issues of deterioration to these Georgian houses which date back to the 18th century.

The survey sought to understand the structural causes of the deterioration, to make strategic, phased and costed recommendations for upgrading the accommodation to meet modern building standards and comfort levels. In this case, particular age-old deficiencies which led to typical rising damp problems with regard to basements, can now be rectified with specially designed interventions.
