Barry Hunt is a chartered geologist, surveyor and scientist with over thirty years’ experience specialising in the investigation and conservation of construction materials. He has more than thirty years’ experience working at the intersection of science and heritage. He has advised on major projects across Ireland, the UK and internationally, with particular expertise in natural stone, roofing slate, concrete, façades and heritage masonry.
A Fellow of the Geological Society and the Royal Microscopical Society, he has led investigations into natural stone, façade conservation and construction materials on projects including Buckingham Palace, the Bank of England and the UK Houses of Parliament. He combines technical expertise with a strong commitment to the conservation of historic buildings and the sustainable use of traditional materials. In addition to consultancy and expert witness work, Barry has published extensively on the care and performance of traditional and modern construction materials.
His work combines scientific investigation with hands-on surveying techniques, often using rope access and abseiling to access high structures, providing practical solutions for the long-term care of historic and modern structures. Barry has worked with Southgate Associates on a variety of projects over the last thirty years, working on projects which have included Cobh Cathedral, Dunboy Castle and Dublin Port.
